Introduction

On 23rd October 2015, all business students have been divided into several groups. I met my new members in Group 1 at Dewan Kuliah 1 and we have an introduction meeting at BSB1. We discussed about our position in the group and I am holding the position as Program and Protocol member. Furthermore, we also discussed the idea of where are the places that we are going to go for the social activities.

At the end, we decided to go to Dapur Jalanan at Pasar Seni and Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) at Chow Kit that would sum up to 30 hours. Besides, we also did the fund raising to earn some money to buy some snacks and presents for the kids at SBJK. We sold muffins RM 2 for 1 unit and RM 5 for 3 units. I earned RM 22 for selling 13 muffins.

Dapur Jalanan
20th March 2016 – Sunday

All of us gathered at UM Central at 12:00 pm and left UM at 12.30 pm to LRT Universiti Station. Some of us went by LRT and some of us went by their own cars. We dropped by LRT Bangsar Station for a lunch break and Zohor Prayer. All of us gathered here and started to walk to Kelab Bangsar Utama at 2.00 pm. We were welcomed by the Dapur Jalanan (DJ) members at the ground floor.

We went upstairs and started our job in preparing the foods. I was incharged in cutting the fruits to make fruit salads. But before that, the head of the club briefed us about the menu that we were going to cook for that day. Some of us cracked the eggs and smashed it to make sandwiches. After we finished our job, we ask some questions to the DJ members about the club. I felt that they have done a great job in helping the homeless people despite waiting for the government to do something because action speaks louder than words.

After that, we went back to LRT Bangsar Station for a short break and Asar Prayer. We continued our journey at 5.00 pm to Pasar Seni Station by LRT. We walked to Jalan Panggung to distribute the foods. Surprisingly, the homeless people already waited and lined up for the foods. The head member of DJ assigned and divided us into some units. I was incharged in making and filling the water into the cup to distribute to the homeless people. Some of us incharged in distributing the foods, cleaning the food wastes and interviewing some homeless people.

What I can conclude from this social activity, we should help people in need in any ways that we could afford because they deserve some happiness in their life. They did not have anyone to rely on so why not we lend a hand so that we could have an equal happiness? Do good because one day the good will come to you.

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK)
25th March 2016 – Friday

I felt slightly worried and excited at the same time for this social activity because this is my first time handling a program at school.  Besides, this is not an ordinary school because the students are special in terms of their family background.

We arrived SBJK at 8.30 am and the headmaster briefed us about the school. We started our program at 9.00 am. We walked to the classroom and I saw that the preschool classroom was decorated colourful and nicely.

We were incharged in handling the preschool students and started the program by introducing ourselves. Some of the kids were so energetic while some of them were so quiet. The program proceeds with other activities such as musical chair, watching moral values movies, dancing, drawing and colouring. We ended our activities at 4.00 pm by giving the presents to all the students so that they became more motivated to study.

In my opinion, the most interesting activities is drawing and colouring. This is because I can see their creativity and the way they show their own ideas on a piece of paper. One of the students that attracted me was Akim. He drew his dream house and coloured it differently from others. Rather than having a blue or red rooftop, he coloured it with different colours. This shows that despite having unusual family background, it did not stop his creativities and willingness to study.

Sekolah Jalinan Bimbingan Kasih (SBJK)
15th April 2016 – Friday

I felt at ease because I have been to this school before and I felt excited because our team was going to conduct an explorace for the primary students.

We arrived at SBJK at 8.30 am and the headmaster,Encik Zukernai briefed us about the school. On that day, some crews from Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) recorded some of our activities and they would like to see how the kids communicate with people. We started our program with aerobics so that the kids were ready to play the next games. They were divided into 8 groups. The program proceeds with other activities such as DIY vs CANS, quizzes, fill in the water, build a line, tower and balls.

I was incharged in the DIY vs CANS games. In this game, they have to create a new thing from a newspaper to be thrown towards a pyramid of cans. From this game, I could see their creativities and hardship to win the games by making sure the cans fell down. Some of them also asked me to teach them how to make an aeroplane. This shows their willingness to know and explore new things.

We ended our activities at 3pm by giving the presents to all the students to encourage them to participate in more programs and to attend to school everyday.

6th May 2016 – Friday

I arrived at SBJK at 8.30 am and I felt pretty thrilled and sad because it was the last day to serve for the community there. We started our program with aerobic session at the parking lot. I helped to organize the kids in several lines so that they had some space to warm up. I felt that this aerobic session helped them to boost their energy and prevent any incident that might happen.

After that, we gathered at the canteen and continued with the drawing and colouring session. We passed colourful paper to them and encourage them to participate by giving some suggestions on what to draw. I found that some of them were too shy to express their talent and some of them are really good in drawing and exceeded my expectation. I felt that this session helped them to boost their creativity and build up their confidence in expressing their talent.

Next, we proceeded the session with closing ceremony as a mark of the end of our social engagement officially. At the end of the day, we celebrated some birthdays on May with 2 delicious cakes. I felt touched with their happy faces.

Conclusion

I feel that Social Engagement Course is a really beneficial course. I have learnt and experienced a lot of things through out the activities. One of the things that I learnt is about teamwork. I barely know my teammate because we live in different residential college. We always discuss together before making any decision. We also will try to solve any problems and come out with new resolution. I made many new friends and I had a lot of fun working with them because all of us put 100% commitment in this program. I am really thankful to all parties involved such as Dapur Jalanan Team, Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih Teachers and not to forget Dr. Zalfa for giving me the guidance and opportunity to involve in this social activities.

Memorable photo of us :)
