REFLECTION

            Before start to do those community services, all of us been grouped. The first day I meet the others in my group was a surprise, because there are some of them that I never see in the faculty before. However, this is the time for me to get to know more friends. I introduced myself and followed by the others and start to discussed what had been told in the general briefing session.

            I understand what is my task and the difficultness, which is more to contribute to the community and self-improvement. But at the same time, I learned on how to deal with the problem that my group members and I will meet and I get to know that there are still peoples who need the concern from the society.

            When the discussion started, I share my ideas and opinion, and when conflicts occur, all of us will discuss it again and again to make sure that the activities is suitable and decrease the weakness of the program as little as possible. I learned that the collaboration between teammates and responsibility are crucial criteria for being a group members, which is be responsible to do what had been assigned and the need to assist the other group members, so that the program will be well-planned and able to get those effect as expected.

            Lots of problem occurred when all of us are finding and choosing those activities that we found, this is because some of the activities are not directly serve to the community. So, our group supervisor, Dr. Zalfa gave us some ideas, in which those ideas are directly serve to the community and it’s a golden chance for me and my group members to get into the real world where it is totally difference with what we imagined.

            In the first meeting, we decided the position for every group members. This help us to be more efficient in making a decision. When we settled our activities that to be done, our supervisor briefed us on what we have to prepare and what we need to do for every position holder. For example, those who are in logistic department are needed to survey the location before we are going there. 

            The First Day- Dapur Jalanan

            On the first day of program, we went to the location as we planned, and everything was going smoothly. My group members and I prepare the foods and beverages at the club of the Dapur Jalanan. The most important part is when we are giving out the foods that we prepared to those homeless and poor. I am so shocked when I saw them, because it was unexpected in which some of them are friendly and willingly to let us interview and take their pictures.

I interviewed some of those homeless and poor, I found that they are quite easy to get along with us, as long as we do not have intention to keep distant with them. They willing to share with me about their life and answer my questions. But there are also those who does not like to be interview and rejected us to take photo with them.

            After the interview I found that actually they are no difference with us, but just they do not have the ability to work and some of them does not want to work. Lots of them do the collection of those recyclable materials and sell it to get the money. I felt that they actually do not need the sympathetic from the society but they just need some help. I learned from them in which to be appreciate what I have now and to be caring for those who are really need our help.

Second Project- Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih

            Before going to the school, lots of preparation need to do, this is because our group are the one who is organizing everything, not like the first activities in which we just follow what had been planned by the NGO. So, lots of searching and information gather had been done, so that we will have alternatives when problems occur.

            This is the first time I come to this school, which is the only school in the world that accept students who does not have any document like birth certificate. Before coming to this school, al of us had been told that those students are different with us and the school is totally different with any other school in this world.

            The first time I approached to those pre-schoolers and primary school students, I was wondering, how are they differ from us. It is difficult to imagine how and where they lived when they are not in this school, and you will know the differences once you approach them, said by the principal.

Through my observation, they are physically same with us but some of them are obviously underweight. But I do not think that they just simply differ with us in that aspect. I found that they are very sensitive towards the other peoples. Moreover, I felt that their mind-set had been influenced by the surrounding where they are living, which their perspectives towards this world and the peoples is shaped by the living surroundings, although that they are just small kids, but the effect of the living surrounding seems root in their mind. This shown when I was talking with one of the kids, where he said that he does not believe anyone even his best friend in the school, and he told me that this is what his parent taught him. I was shocked and try to advise him, but seems that it is difficult for him to changes his view towards the others.

            I do not think that they need our sympathetic, but they really need to be educated. They have to learn on how to deal with whatever happen around them with a better way. Some of them have the interest in learning, but some of them do not. I was shocked when they eventually requested me to teach them, while there are lots of students nowadays do not want to learn anything and do not have any passion to learn.

            After finished all the activities, I learned that cooperation and collaboration between group members is an important element when I am a group member. Besides this, I also found that I am so lucky in which I can have those things that I needed, and I learn to appreciate what I have now rather than keep demanding for what I do not have. Besides this, I also learned that I have to improve myself towards a better of me in the future, in case to have the ability to help those who are needed. The passion in learning is also what I need to learn, which all of the peoples lost it during school time.

Third Project-SBJK

            The activities that I conducted is a quizzes games, in which we made it as interesting as possible, due to what had the principal said that, those kids do not like to do something which need them to think.

            During the activities being conducted, what I can conclude from my observation is that those kids are no difference with the kids nowadays. They are energetic and lively, they can do all the quizzes by themselves, and the most important is that they are not afraid of making mistake, and they keep trying until they get the correct answer. This is the most precious and the most important value that we had lost, peoples nowadays are afraid of making mistakes which lead us to become timid and does not want to step out from our comfort zone. Lots of peoples nowadays are afraid of trying new things, luckily these kids still have this precious value.

            They are easily get bored if they unable to answer the quizzes, so encourages and patient is needed. But it is not easy to get their attention, this is due to some of them unable to concentrate on what they have to do, and some of them are not interested to do the quizzes. However, all of them are able to answer all the quizzes that we set, I felt that they actually do not have big difference with us, but just they lack of concern from the others. I learnt a lot from them, which it all reflected on me that I’ve been afraid to try new things and the spirit of not afraid to make mistake.

            When I was conducting the activities, I found that some of the kids are not sociable, in which they do not want to play in groups. One of this case is the kid unable to do anything due to the leader of the group is quite dictatorial. And I realised that this kind of problem may occur on adult, or student like me, and this is able to be prevented. So, I learnt that I have to give chances to the others to let them speak out their mind although I have a better idea. I think this is the spirit that all of the members must have when they are in a group.

            As a conclusion, I really learnt from those kids, as what the Confucius said, do not feel ashamed to learn from those who may not as knowledgeable as you. This is a fruitful program to me, I really gained lots of experience on how to deal with kids and to be a responsible group member.

CONCLUSION

            The series of program is not just benefit to the community but also let me to reflect myself. I am able to learn a lot from those peoples that I met when we are conducting the program. The collaboration and cooperation is a main thing for a group to accomplish a task perfectly, without it, nothing can be done. So, the spirit of being in a group is important for every group member, and I will continue to improve myself towards a responsible group member and give my commitment as much as possible.
