Reflection by Nurul Atiqah bt Zulkiffli (CEB150114)

Before/Planning Phase

First of all, in Semester 1, all the students from Faculty of Business and Accountancy have to attend a briefing at Dewan Kuliah Lim Goh Tong regarding the subject Social Engagement that will be carried out in Semester 2. During the briefing some lecturers gave all of the students explanation about what should be done. We were divided into groups, with each group consisting of 11 students. After the briefing, a meeting were held with Dr. Zalfa Laili Hamzah and it is compulsory for every group members to attend. During the meeting, everyone brainstormed ideas about where, when and how the program should be carried out. Besides, we also discussed the roles of every group members. After a few meetings, we decided to go to Dapur Jalanan on the first day, and to Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih on the next 3 days.

Meeting

Before the program is being held, we did a fundraising for 3 days (15/3/2016-17/3/2016) and collected RM5 from each group members. We sell muffins and all the profits were used to buy all the equipment and prizes for the program. Before the program, I felt really excited as this is my first time to be involved in such programs. I realized that during the planning stage, discipline and responsibilities are the two core values that every group members should have. Being discipline is meant by attending meetings on time, giving full commitments, and participating with group members in order to make things happen. On the other hand, by being responsible, we try our best to play our role.

During Phase

Dapur Jalanan (20/3/2016)

Firstly, we gathered at UM central at 12 p.m to take the Rapid bus to go to LRT station. We took the LRT from the University Station to Bangsar Station. Next, we took a 5 minutes walk to Kelab Bangsar Utama to prepare the foods to be contributed to the people at Jalan Panggong. The food preparation started at 2 p.m.

Food Preparation at Kelab Bangsar Utama
Around 5 p.m we took the LRT from Bangsar to Pasar Seni and straight away make the move to Jalan Panggong. Once we arrived, we straight away set up the foods on the tables and get ready to serve at 6 p.m. While they were enjoying their foods, we took that opportunity to have a chit chat (interview session) with them to know them better. By getting to know them, many lessons could be learnt. After the food sharing, there are debriefing and sharing sessions with all the volunteers and the members of the Dapur Jalanan Club. During the sharing session, we are able to detect what parts of the program that could be improved in the future. However, I could proudly say that everything went well without any major problems and I will surely join these kinds of activities in the future.

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK)

Day 1 (25/3/2016)

On the first day at SBJK, we felt really excited and amazed by the school itself. The school is definitely different than any other schools that we have been to. After we arrived, we were greeted and welcomed by one of the school teachers which is known as Teacher Nadia. Next, we were given a briefing by the school principal, Mr. Zukernai Fauzi. He told us about the school background and gave us some advice on how to handle the students later on. After the briefing, we finally met the students. We were divided into 4 groups. 1 group handled the preschoolers, while the other 3 groups handled Basic 1, Basic 2 and Basic 3.

Drawing Contest
Many activities were carried out, such as drawing contest, watching videos, dancing, playing games, and learning ABC's. The students seem to have a lot of fun on that day and they wanted us to come back again. By looking at them, I honestly feel sympathy. I feel emotionally attached to them. I kept thinking in my head that how these young children are living such a challenging life. I could only pray for their best and have a brighter future ahead.

Day 2 (15/4/2016)

Once again, we went to SBJK to have more fun with the students.  As usual, the school principal gave us the briefings about the school once again as there are representatives from RTM that will make a documentary regarding our program. After the briefing, we prepared the things for explorace while the students are having their breakfast. After having breakfast, all the students start by having an aerobics session for 10 minutes, followed by the explorace. Before that, the students are divided into 8 groups. The games that needed to be completed by the students are fill water in the bottle, mystery box, build towers using straws and some quizzes. The winning team were rewarded a hamper according to the positions they get. After the prize-giving session, it is time for us to say goodbye. We look forward to meet them again in the future.

Day 3 (6/5/2016)

Day 3 is the last day we will be at SBJK. We start the day by having an aerobic session. The students of SBJK seems to have a lot of fun.

Aerobic session
Next, we have a decorating session where we hang the student's creative drawings at the side of the hall. After the decorating session. it is recess time. After recess, it is the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony consists of the headmaster's speech, lecturer's speech, student leader's speech, Cikgu Nadiah's speech, souvenir session, video presentation, and lastly photograph session.

After that is prayer and lunch time. Next is party time, which is the most awaited. There are music live band, singing and dancing, cake and foods, and also ended with photography.

After Phase

After the program ended, I personally feel very satisfied. I feel that my group members and I had achieved something usefull in our life. The experience and memories that we all get from Dapur Jalanan and SBJK are priceless. As I have never joined these kinds of activities before, the program make me feel really proud of myself and also with my group members as we are capable of organizing such programs. The program teaches me that as a human being, we should always help others in need. Besides, I feel more grateful with my life as I have seen others who have face more hardships than me. After the program ended, it is time to focus on doing reflections, presentation and preparing our report to be handed to Dr. Zalfa. The presentation will be done on 26/5/2016 which is on Thursday, at 4 PM. Now that the Social Engagement program has ended, it is time to focus on our final examination. I will definitely look forward to more activities and new experiences from such programs in the future.
