The beginning / Planning phase
Social engagement - a course that was introduced for every first year degree undergraduates. It is compulsory for the students to pass in this course. We were asked to attend a short brief about how to implement this course. There are two briefs and the
briefing was held at Dewan Lim Goh Tong, which was the largest lecture hall in
the Faculty of Business and Accountancy of University Malaya.
We were divided into several groups earlier, and we
were required to sit according to the groups given, so we can get to know
who are our group members and also had our first short discussion at BSB 01 with our supervisor, Dr. Zalfa Laili Hamzah
that will guide us and supervise our activities throughout all the 40 hours of
community service and meetings. In that meeting, we were discuss about the programme that we want to implement and assign the positions for each members. After the meeting, I become the treasurer for my group. It is a responsibility for me and I have to take it wisely.
Meeting.... |
FUNDRAISING... ( 15/3-17/3) 3 DAYS...
This is our first plan in the social engagement. My group members and I were already discuss that we are going to sell the muffins to get our fund for implementation of the programme in the social engagement course. Initially, we want to do a car wash activities but I and my friends look at the obstacles that we were going to face such as water resources and other things. Moreover, one of our members has already sell the muffins during the entrepreneurs day and the responses are very good and more profits they get.
The fundraising was held in 3 days and we were selling the muffins individually because we have lack of time for us to sell together due to schedule for our classes are differently. We were selling three flavors of muffins include chocolate, banana and vanilla. Each members got 13 muffins include all the three flavors. Most of us were selling the muffins at our own residential college and we got good feedbacks and response from our friends. And Alhamdulillah we got some profits from our sales. From this activities, I can see the cooperation and the efforts among my group members to gain the funds for our programme soon.
Start selling...!!! |
In addition, we also collect the funds among our group members for RM5 per person to cover more profits for our programme which are requires more expenses. Finally, the first plan is DONE!!!
DURING PHASE
DAPUR JALANAN ... - (20/3) SUNDAY
It was the first day of social
engagement! To be honest, I was full in energy (and a little bit excited too)
because it was my first time be volunteer for Dapur Jalanan club. I and my friends went there by public transport (Lrt station) but some of us go by their own car, then we meet at Lrt Bangsar station.
Waiting for Lrt..... |
First, we were gather at UM Central at 12 pm to get the rapid KL bus to go to LRT University. All of us were excited to start our programme include me. According to the tentative of the day, we were do a food preparation at Kelab Bangsar Utama. After I and my friends arrived at Lrt Bangsar, we were going for a lunch near the station and after that we want to find 'surau' to pray Zohor. It is difficult time for me and my friends to find the 'surau' because we unfamiliar with that place. After a few minutes, we already find 'surau' and we pray at there. Then, we search for the center of Dapur Jalanan Club. We walked just for a while and we were welcome by the members of Dapur Jalanan Club. It is a building that have 3 levels and then, we go upstairs of the building to start our food preparation at 2 pm.
Firstly, the head chef of the club was brief us about what we were going to prepare include the menu and how to do it. He also showed us the kitchen and other equipment that we need during the food preparation. One of the menu Nasi Ayam Ramesh that sound delicious.
Menu... |
But at that time, we only have to do the fruits salad and egg sandwiches. The main menu which is Nasi Ayam Ramesh will be sponsored by someone and it do not have to prepare. We were divided into two groups which are the first group prepare for the fruits and another group prepare for the sandwiches. I am very excited to do our preparation for the food because we prepare it for the homeless and for me it is a noble experiences that I never feel before. For my group, we prepare the fruits salad include watermelon, apple, pears, grape and much more. We were assign our duty to everyone so that it will be more faster. After that we combined all fruits into one container and our chef do the next step which is mix the fruits with yogurt and it is very delicious.
SMILE...!!! |
YUMMY.... |
Mix with yogurt... |
Since my group finished first to prepare the fruits salad, we were helping the other group to make the egg sandwiches. I feel very happy because it is not only a programme to fulfill the subject but also can make our relationship as friends tightly bound. Next, after finished the preparation, we have a short brief for the food sharing activity at Jalan Panggong. Two of the members of Dapur Jalanan Club was briefing us and also share their experiences in the volunteer activities that I and my friends can take it as our guidance to do other volunteer programme.
Short Brief... |
After the short brief, we were going to pray for the muslim before we proceed to our next activity which is food sharing activity at Jalan Panggong. Then, we go there by Lrt and arrived at the destination about 15 minutes later at 5.30 pm. I and my friends need to walk to go to the place for the food sharing activity and at that time my feeling is mix (firstly, feel excited and then change to afraid) because it is my first time doing this activity which is involves a variety types of humans and they have different lifestyles than me.
The food sharing activity were started at 6pm. Before that, we were assign to do different things include prepare for the water, distribute food, give spoon and fork and hygiene part. Then, after we already prepare all the foods, we started the food sharing activity. My job is give spoon and fork for the homeless and I met many people from different races that are 'fighting' to get the food include the kids, the pregnant woman and others. For me, this moment is very touching my feeling because it is reminds me that I have to be grateful for what I have in my life and not complain at all because there are a lot of people that no have shelter and food outside.
NASI AYAM RAMESH... still preparing. |
Hygiene part... |
During the activity, some of us were interview the homeless about the food and their resources how they know this kind of activity (Dapur Jalanan). Then, after we finished the food sharing activity, I and my friends do the cleaning job around the place to make sure there are no trash to ensure cleanliness. After all have finished, there are debriefing and sharing session among us and members of the Dapur Jalanan Club.
In the debriefing and sharing session, we know that there are also have another volunteers from University of Malaya but in the different faculty. In this session, we told about the unsatisfied from the homeless about the food. Some of them comment the 'sambal' of Nasi Ayam Ramesh are spicy for them and the fruits salad are stiff to bite. I think it is a good session which is the club can improve their services and the ways they provide and distribute the foods. We also share our feeling and experiences that we gained from the activity at the day. After 10 minutes doing the sharing session, finally we already done for our first activity and before that we take photos as our memories with Dapur Jalanan Club. They are awesome person and thank you for give this valuable opportunity for me and my friends to feel this new experiences.
Debriefing and Sharing Session... |
DONE..!!! PEACE... |
To conclude, everything went well in the
first day. There's something about volunteering that gives me great pleasure.
SEKOLAH BIMBINGAN JALINAN KASIH -(25/3) FRIDAY (PHASE 1)
Anddddddddd.... It was the
second day of social engagement!!! But it is the first day we organized the programme at this school. For this programme, I feel excited because we started to wear our social engagement's shirts. Moreover, I feel very excited because it is my first programme at Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) in the Chow Kit area with those selected students. We were also combined with the another two group to implement this kind of programme.
We were gathered at UM Central at 7 am in the morning. After that, we go to LRT University by bus and take a train to go to KL Central. It takes about 10 minutes to arrive there. Then, we exchange to the monorel to go Masjid Jamek and proceed to Chow Kit station. At that time, we reached at the school a bit late because we struggled to find the train to go to Chow Kit station because we were unfamiliar go to Chow Kit. After almost one hour to arrive at the school, we reached at SBJK school safely. And do you know my first expressions about this school are very clean, peaceful, no voice from the students like a normal school and the atmosphere in the school is very beautiful. My thought at that time is how lucky the kids who study at here where were provide many facility and have good and comfortable convenience.
SBJK....!!! |
After all of us have already arrived at the school, we waited for Teacher Nadia who is counselor in the school. Miss Nadia also have already give us a lot of information and helping us to do programme in Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih. Then, we have a briefing from the principal of the school, Encik Zukernai Fauzi about the background and more details about the school.
Briefing.... |
From the briefing we can know more information about this school. Let me share and tell a little bit background of the school based on Encik Zukernai briefs us. First, proposed establishment of SBJK is initiative from KPM against the needs to continue the efforts that provide access to education for the street children around Kuala Lumpur which is one of the marginalized groups of children in the country. The operations of SBJK began at 19 August 2013 and the building stands in the center of Kuala Lumpur is strategically located to meet the needs of children who are less fortunate around the city.
After the briefing, we supposed to do the aerobics session but we have lack of time to do it so we proceed our activities by started our programme to divided the students into several classes. Ohhhh...before I forgot, my group will handle the preschool students and the another group will handle the primary students but since our preschool students have less than 10 students, some of us including me were helping the another group with the primary students which are have more than the preschool students. For the primary students, we separated them according to their level which are level 1,2 and 3. From this situation, I can evaluate the important of cooperation among the group members to implement a programme.
Divided the kids into classes.... |
Since, I was helping another group so I will tell the activities that the another group were provided for this primary students (level 2). First, they were doing drawing activities which is the students have to draw any things that come in their minds. Some of them draw the cartoon, houses, cars and others. After that, we proceed to dance activity which is the students have to sing and dance together with the facilitators. As what I can see, this dancing activity give more effects to the students because they are very active and prefer to the activities that have more movements. In addition, we also do a musical chair activity among the students.
Then, I go back for the preschool students because the another group said already can handle them. So, it is opportunity for me at the day which is I can do activities with the primary and preschool students. When, I enter at the preschool class, they already started their games. They were very happy watched the movies of 'Upin & Ipin' and 'Pada Zaman Dahulu'. Can you imagine before the movies started they are very active and cannot be sit at one place silently but... after the movies started, the active kids change to 'passive' kids and very quiet while watching the movies. It is very funny moments for us.
Movies Time... |
Besides, we were not only show them the movies but we also want them to tell what had they watched by giving some questions based on the movies and most of the kids can answer it and got the prizes. They are very clever kids..!!! I feel so happy and enjoy with them. After that, we proceed to the next activities, Guess It which is the kids have to guess the animal that their friends will showed by movements and sounds. For me, this activity can develop the kid's mind to think outside the box.
Guess It.... |
After the Guess It games, I and my friends take a recess and give the preschool and primary students to have their lunch. We also have our lunch which is Nasi Ayam that our supervisor Dr.Zalfa sponsored the food. If you are reading this, thank you
for treating us, Thank you... Dr.Zalfa!!! After lunch, the muslim go to pray at mosque near the school. But for the woman, we pray at the 'surau' in the school. We started again our tentatives at 2.30 pm.
Lunch Hour..... |
Then, after 30 minutes, I and my friends collected their drawing and the winner will be announce at the end of the programme. Next, we proceed to dancing activity that include Didi and Friend's song. They are very happy and dancing by follow the songs. But if some parts they know, they will sing together. It is enjoyable moments with them and I am very enjoy it.
Dancing Time...!!! |
Finally, we reached at the end of the session which is giving the prizes to them. Before we ended, there are some appreciation we gave to the teacher. To be honest, I really enjoy and get a valuable experiences with the kids because they are very cute and adorable. I am very grateful can spending my time with this special kids and also gives me some reminder that we have to appreciate what we have in this life. What an unforgettable memories for
social engagement! Love ya!
Giving the prizes.... |
Love this Memories.....!! DONE .. |
SEKOLAH BIMBINGAN JALINAN KASIH -(15/4) FRIDAY (PHASE 2)
SBJK....!!!! we are BACK.... Today is the second day we do a programme in Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih in Chow Kit City. But for this phase, we do in mid semester break and most of us from their hometown. And this phase also, I got a difficult situations which is a student from third residential college cannot stay in the college except have the project college. At that time, I am very disappointed and always find the ways. Fortunately, my members from a same social engagement group willing to give me stay in her room for one night. Thanks God...!!!
Our schedule is almost same with phase 1 but the differences are the inputs and games that we wants to give and plays with the students. I feel very excited because can spend time again with the kids along the day. Before we go to the school, we have prepare some gifts to the winner for the games. At night, we wrapped the gifts and prepare for the material. First, I and my friends go to the school by our car and all of us were gathered together at the school. So, after I reached at the school, I looked a lot of people in the school and my thought maybe they are visitors. But the truth is we are so lucky because a journalist from RTM came to look and record the activities that we did with the students. At that time, I and my friends were very excited and have a high spirits to show them how the students from University of Malaya can give a big impacts to the students after the programme.

Preparation.... |
Then, we again have a briefing from the principal, Encik Zukernai Fauzi about the school and this time we have more details about the school because the content of the briefing same like the first phase before but it is just a gentle reminder for us to know more about the students and the school. We also watched the video that prepared by the organizations of the school. It is really touching and reminds me how I have to be very grateful. After almost one hour, the briefing ended at 9.30 am. We proceed to our first activities which is aerobic session with the students. It took about 10 minutes for this session and just for warm up before we started the explorace games.
Next, we started our explorace games at about 10 am. The explorace include the quiz, fill in the bottle, build tower and much more. In this games, I will be person in charge in the 'fill in the bottle' game. Aisyah, Fatin and Syaika are my assistant that will control the games. I feel very happy to start this games because want to look the happiness from the students when playing this games. First session, they divided into 8 groups that have their own named include 'akar', 'daun', 'bunga' and 'batang'. For this session, facilitators also were assign to each group and their duty is to guide the groups during the explorace games. This session ended at 10.40 am and we have to let go the students for having their breakfast till 11 am.
After recess, we started again our games at 11.00 am. I forgot already to tell... that every person in charge for every station will get the sticker and have to give to the group leader after the group has pass the station. There are eight groups and they will be a challenge for every station with different games. For my games, all the group have pass but only one group should be punished because not pass in the games. Moreover, majority of them know my games which is 'fill in the bottle' and I do not have to explain details about the games. Through this activity, I can see the cooperation among my members group and the creativity of the students in solving the games until success like the quiz and the building tower.
After 1 hour, the explorace games ended at about 12 pm and I look all the students and facilitator were tired and need rest. The recess is from 12.30 till 2.30 pm to give them time to have their lunch and implement Zohor prayer at 'surau'. But for the muslim, they go to Jumaat prayer at Pakistan Mosque near the school. I am also feel very tired but enjoy at the same time.
At 2.30 pm, we proceed to our next plan which is giving a prizes to the winner of the explorace games. At first, we wanted to do a sharing session but because we have lack of time, we have to cancel the session. Furthermore, the students have their own programme at 4 pm, so we have to finish our programme before 4 pm. I think that is our risk when we organized a programme which is not all our plan can be implement as planned. So, the time has come to announce the winner and they will get a gifts from us. But as we can expected, it is not easy to control them and for me we have to attract their attention first before we proceed to another activities. That is what the counselor of the school told me and my friends. Then, the event to give the prizes ended almost at 3.30 pm and at the end of the speech, we thanked to all the teacher and the students for all cooperation that they gave. I feel very sad and touching at that time because they welcome us with open hearts to do this programme with them. So, our second trips at the school ended......!!!
Unforgettable memories......!!! Bye Bye... |
LAST
DAY: SEKOLAH BIMBINGAN JALINAN KASIH
Today is the last day we
visited Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) and my feeling are mix at that
time with excited and sadness to go to this school again. Before we were going
to the school, we have prepare many things because we want to do a good closing
ceremony for the kids. I reached the school around 8.00 am by my friend’s car.
We started with the aerobic session by 9.00 am.
There are six
facilitators to manage and conduct the session and the student at that time was
very happy and excited to sing ''Merdeka'' song by Faizul Sani that we used to
do aerobic session. It was the song used in Minggu Haluan Siswa for me and my
group as the new students of University of Malaya. The students were taught to
follow our movement during the session and we had lots of fun while doing it.
Everyone did it very well.
After aerobic
activities, we proceed to the next activities which is required the kids to
draw whatever come out in their minds. The students were given a piece of paper
according their favourite colour and required to draw anything they
wanted. They were very excited to draw and colour the drawing. After they
finished it, the drawings were collected and hanged for display. All of the
drawings were beautiful and they were so happy to see their drawings. I was
amazed because many of them were very creative at drawing and colouring.
The closing ceremony is very enjoyable moments. The closing ceremony started and began with speech from the teacher and
ended from our lecturers, Dr Yus. But, before we started the ceremony, we do the cheers
and the students singing. The
moment I could not forget was when it was the time for me and my other group
members to perform the cheers to all of the students. It was UM cheers that
represent by us. I was proud because I was the one who carried UM's name and
image. I wish some of the students will get the chance to further study in
University of Malaya one day. Besides, the students also have their own cheers
and it was happening. Besides, While all the kids were enjoy singing, there is one of
the emotional moments when a little boys, Amirul from Asas 1, who actually OKU
singing for the first time and he confident to hold the microphone and singing
in front of his friends. It is very touching.
After the Friday's prayer, we all prepared for our
closing party. Then, I
and my group also had birthday party with the students. I and my group decided
to use our money to buy two birthday cakes for the students as well as we all
celebrated those students who were born in May. I and my group sing birthday
song and ate together with the students. I was very happy to see the smiles on
their faces. It felt great to share with them because it is not that something
I can do for them every day.
After that, the band from the school make a
performance. They are very talented because they can play the musical
instrument and singing. They also
have their own band. I hope they will achieve success in music industry if
given a chance. Our
group members also make a performance on that day. After that we enjoy eat the
cakes and snacks. Lastly, we ended the last ceremony for this schools. It was
very unforgettable moments for me and my friends. Thank you.
AFTER PHASE???
Well, what are the outcome
for everything that I do for social engagement? First, I learned on how to be
grateful for what I have. I should not ask for more, I have a perfect family, I
still have parents to support me whenever I feel down, my parents are not rich
but they try so hard to give me what I want. During my activities either in Dapur Jalanan and programme at Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, I can see many people do not have foods and shelters and it is reminds me that I have to be grateful for what I have in my life
and not complain at all because there are a lot of people that no have
shelters and foods outside. They are grateful for what they
have, they share everything they have without complaining.
Secondly, I get to sharpen my soft skills such as communication skills and time management. A good communication skills is important for today’s era, especially for a student like me. I learned on how to communicate well with top management, I sharpen my English skills by chit chatting with other volunteers, and how to communicate well to the kids and the unknown peoples.
It really was a good
experiences to volunteer with Dapur Jalanan Club and with the students in SBJK. Moreover, when we do our fundraising, it teach me how to attract the customers and put an effort to find the funds to proceed our programme. It is also showed the cooperation among us as one group.
Besides, during programme in Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, I can learned how to organize a programme that involves the students and for me every activities must have the objective so the students can feel the impacts after they participated in the programme. And also as a volunteers we faced with variety of people, so we have to adapt ourselves faster to the environment and not showing awkward when we doing activities with them especially the kids. I also think that we have to be clever to attract attention of the kids and doing the activities that they like.
Finally, I would like to suggest that
social engagement will continue sending volunteers at SBJK and Dapur Jalanan Club because it gives us advantages and good experiences to keep in touch with the communities. Last but not least, I
would like to express my gratitude to our instructor, Dr Zalfa for guiding us
throughout the project, thank you so much for the guidance. Secondly, thank you to group
leader, Zafran Qayyum and C.Keat Yap for managing all the works
behind the scene such as contacting the person in charge, managing and
continuously reminding us about our work. Thanks to all my friends that are in
the same boat with me, we managed to complete 30 hours of social engagement! I truly had a great time during this project. I wish I can
return as a volunteer once again. I hope to see the kids
again the future and I wish them to stay happy as they are right now.
