Reflection by Phase

By: Ooi Chin Peng (CEB 150126)

Before/Planning Phase
The planning phase is one of the most important part in the program prosecuting afterwards. The planning of the program included collect all those related raw information, dissect the information, analysis and make the final decision. All of the group members presented all the information that they acquired and we all discussed on it. We have to consider everything when we are discussing about what to do for this project and who we will be serving and the location. Furthermore, we will have to held a fund raising activity if the program that we will be conducting need a lots of capital. After a series of meeting and discussing, the final decision was made. We start to gather some more related information about the place that we will go and we do some research about the background of the community that we will be serving. We have two communities to serve, which one of it we do combine with the NGO is the Dapur Jalanan, that we will meet those poor and homeless, and the second community is from the Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, we will be meet those kids who are from poor and homeless, and never had any formal educated before this. We roughly planned all the activities, and then the main outline is clear and our task is generally being assigned. All the preparation was done by every group member, for example, do research on the route to the destination and contact the person in charge for the program that we are going to organise. I really felt excited when I saw the commitment from every group member, and I learnt to accept the others opinion and be concise when it comes to problem occurrence.

During Phase
First activities were the Dapur Jalanan, we reach the place together and we are able to reach there on time. And we do what we had been assigned once the person in charge done the briefing. Everything was going smoothly and successfully. I am really appreciating that the NGO willing to let us have this chance to meet with those homeless and poor peoples. The teamwork and the hard work from all of the group members are the essential part to make the activity ended satisfyingly. The next activities are the SBJK, and we are going to deal with those kids who was totally difference with us. When the activities were going on, the participation of those kids makes me felt that our efforts are worth and the commitment from our group member with the organised planned activities are surprisingly able to make those kids remember us. I think this is the best repayment from this activity. I learnt a lot during this activities, in which is cherish and appreciate what I have now, because there always be someone who does not even have what I had now. Moreover, I learnt that to giving out rather than keep receiving from the others, I will do so when I still have the ability to lend anyone a hand, and always be open-minded to accept any criticize from anyone. This is very important when you been told that your weakness and so that you will be able to amend it. I leant that to make changes rather than to be change.

After Phase
After all of the activities been conducted, I reflected on myself. In which from the starting until the end of the project, what had I did and what is the effect. The final result from those activities was quite satisfying, I felt so glad to have the chance to handle all these program, which let me have a chance to get in touch with those communities. Furthermore, the spirit of teamwork is actually makes me want to improve myself to be a better group member in the future. It will be difficult to execute any command if there was no commitment, and luckily this never happen during the implementation of the programs. Moreover, I learnt that always do self-reflection is essential for me to recognize my weaknesses and so that I can make changes to become a better person. I am really appreciated to all the personnel involved in the project, it won’t be such a smooth progress without their efforts. This really let me have a difference experience compare with those simple volunteering works, and I really gained a lot from the planning until the implementing of the project.

 Last Program in SBJK

This is the last time that I will be at this school for my social engagement project. As what planned during few meetings before, this will be the celebration and as the closing ceremony for those program all of us did at the school with those children and teachers.
I tried to be not so close with the kids because I do not want them to be disappointed due to this is the last day that I approach them. As the time passed, the relationship grown between kids and me, and I believed this happened to all of my group members as some of them are really close with the kids. No matter how, I choose to wish and advise them rather than showing my unbearable emotion. As I been told that, those kids are easily to be touched, and their emotion will be unstable if they are in sad or anger. So, the plan for this day is meant to have celebration as ending for our program.
Lots of fun activities and goodies was given to those kids. As usual, they are active and energetic throughout the whole day. I barely have some interactive with them due to I have been assigned to make a video and do some technical chores. I had to filter out all the photos that our photographer had taken, I really felt heart-warming when I see those photos.
Finally, the program ended successfully. I felt that it was a pleasure to get along with those kids, they are innocent, real and sincere and of course with the help of those teacher, so that the program can ended successfully. The most important is, only with those responsible group member, the understandings between all of us, then only can make the program started with doubt and ended meaningfully.

NO ACT OF KINDNESS NO MATTER HOW SMALL IS EVER WASTED

REFLECTION
BY : AMBIGA A/P KRISHNAN CEB150003

PHASE 1: INITIAL ( PLANNING)

I am Ambiga A/P Krishnan, a first year student from Bachelor of Business Administration, University Malaya.  First of all, I would like to thank our group supervisor lecturer Dr. Zalfa Laili Binti Hamzah, who gave a lot of support and advises to help us in carrying out our social engagement.     As a human being, it’s our responsibility to serve for the community, help people and make people’s life happy.  That was the main mind concept that I developed within me during the entire social engagement course.  People might think that, helping people depends on personal interest and from my view, it’s not a personal interest, it’s a must.  First when we were signing up for the two main events as our 30 hours social engagement service, I was worried about that 30 hours.  I might use that 30 hours for movies and hangout with friend instead of helping others.  All these perception and worry changed when we started to engage more in this course. The first thing we did was,we had our first general meeting in tutorial room where we decided to do ice breaking session and divide the task in order  to make sure that every event can carry out efficiently. I was selected as the assistant leader of our group  and my group leader is Zafran. After that, Group 2 has joined our meeting in order  to cooperate with each other in the 2 projects we decided to engage which are  Dapur Jalanan and Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih.

PHASE 2: CURRENT

So,our first volunteering programme is Dapurjalanan.Dapur Jalanan is a volunteer-based soup kitchen services operate every Sunday which is located at Jalan Panggong, Bangsar. They offer free food and drinks to some people who live in the city known as ‘’urban poor’’. Dapur Jalanan does not refer all of them as homeless because some of them have job and shelter but they are lack of financial support. On 20th of March 2016,my  fellow  course mates from Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya being accompanied by our lecturer Dr. Zalfa Laili Binti Hamzah went to Dapurjalanan.

We managed to arrive there early in the morning at Bangsar. Then, ice breaking session took place.Later on,the person in charge told, we need to help to prepare simple meals only which are  sandwiches and fruit salad for the food distribution activity  later in the evening as there a food sponsored by a restaurateur. Without any hesitation,we all  started to do our preparation right after the briefing session.

We decided to finish the food preparation earlier than we expected since we have distributed the tasks efficiently. We then get an opportunity  to get more and various information about Dapur Jalanan Kuala Lumpur from the club members.

We had  small break  after the sharing session ended. Then, we moved together to the food distribution location which is located at Jalan Panggong by LRT. We  managed to set up the food station before the food distribution activity takes place.

We then decided to distribute the food to the people who are already waiting for our presence at the venue. It was a heartbreaking situation actually to see so many of them who are financially down and are suffering to get a meal of the day. We also managed to chat with them to know more about them. I have a nice time with them as they are approachable and friendly too. Time flew so fast that day as we all fully engaged in serving the community there.A group photo is a must when  good times happen so here it is:

For me ,I was really satisfied with our entire teamwork on the day.I had the chance to see and experience myself what it really takes to be a volunteer in any project or events. And the thing  that most strikes me on that day and make me feel devastated was the fact that, there are so many of them out there who don't get food and I don't think twice to waste my food if i don't finish them.I realised that

thank you for the exposure Dapur Jalanan :)

The next event was in Sekolah Jalinan Bimbingan Kasih

25th of March 2016, Friday.

curiosity that deepens in me to know more about the school( screenshot of headline of the school in newspaper-source internet)

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) is one of the initiatives by Malaysia Education Ministry as the access for the street children around Kuala Lumpur that are abandoned in this country to get better education. The school, set up by the Education Ministry  years ago as part of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, is aimed towards helping street children and undocumented children get proper schooling. This special school is located in the centre of the city, Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur. The school is not the same at all  as other government schools. They are not just focusing on academic and the students are free to wear any attire because they do not have uniform. We decided to go to SBJK for social engagement project as prescribed by our lecturer Dr. Zalfa Laili Binti Hamzah.

We were briefed by the honorable principal of SBJK shortly about the school. I personally felt very anxious and happy  to meet the principal, the teachers and the lovely children for the first time.My team members and I were already  assigned to carry out  various types of games and activities which we earlier planned for our event. We had aerobics session, filling water game, eagle game and so on. I was assigned for the game "dance with video songs".  Also, I noticed that whatever the situation is,the teachers are so patient with the kids no matter what. They are really dedicated to their  work and responsibility.

I realized that I should be positive and be responsible with my task or work after noticing the teachers. And at the same ,experience with these kids really made me to appreciate my life better as i  always differentiate my situation with those people who  have more than me. But after seeing those under-privileged children in person, I realized that I should always be really grateful for everything i have been provided.  In  a nutshell, spending a day with the kids with various games and activities really give me a wider look on how noble is our government in initiating such school for these underprivileged children.I learned alot from the children and teachers itself. This experience also opens a different perception  for me to more engage with the community and try to lend a helping hand in anyway possible in the future.

21 May, 2016, Saturday.
Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya

I had to join  Group 4 with their project of teaching the hospital staff’s children of Pusat Perubatan University Malaya’s  as I could not attend the event on  25/3/2016 due to health problem. This was an interesting event as I have never had the experience to teach children.
I managed to join  and help the  group in order to complete my remaining hours after liasing with the senior supervisor of the group,Dr Anna. The team leader of Group 4 ,Weikeat managed to help and guide  me on my task that day .After  arriving at the hospital,Weikeat managed to introduce me to the person in charge of the teaching session there,Miss Sapiah. She briefed me about the children and the things I supposed to teach them. But  earlier before the event,we managed to prepare  the notes and materials that will be used for the teaching session.

I have been assigned to teach Mathematics to primary school children from standard 4 to 6.Miss Sapiah showed how much passion she have in this teaching work and she was determined to guide me through too.She told me that punctuality is very important in her work. The first and foremost thing I learned is the patience of handling the children and make them understand the topics being teached. On that day,I had 6 students from standard 4 to 6 to teach as some of them are absent.Eventhough there are not many of them to be teached that day,but it was not easy to make them understand the topics as some of them have different ways of understanding the subject.I managed to try my best to make them understand as Mathematics is my favorite subject since small.I managed to communicate and teach them in bilingual in order to make them more understand of the things I teach them.

At the same time, members from group 4 also busy teaching their groups of children. Some of  the Subjects being taught are Science ,Bahasa Malaysia, and Kajian Tempatan. They look very determined in teaching the children and having a lot of fun with them as the children are very jovial. As some of the members had experiences of teaching before, I observed them and learnt some the techniques  required to teach the children and those techniques helped me to teach them as I wanted.
The students were also cooperative and understanding. I  managed to made them understand the whole  topic. I also gave them mathematics problems to do and they successfully did  it. I was relieved as I  made them understood the  topic that I teach them. I learned that how important and difficult is the task of teacher to make sure the knowledge and skills  are  well absorbed by the students. Also, if a teacher teaches something to the students, he/she  should have full knowledge about that topic.

Then only he will be  able to teach properly . A teacher has to be determined, punctual and caring  towards the  students as well.  The teachers should be well-mannered  also. After teaching the students, I was finally relieved and happy as they show positive feedback of the understanding the topics I taught them.It was really a great new experience for me. And I  would like to express my greatest gratitiude to Dr Zalfa, and Dr Anna for giving me the chance to experience  something I never taught of doing. In future,I would  absolutely make time to visit again and  help to teach them.

    PHASE 3 : AFTER

The first value that I learned in these entire social engagement events is teamwork.  We as a team ,worked hard to make sure all our duties that  being delivered to us during the events run smoothly.  We started to understand each other, communicating with each other more often.  Via this, I was able to identify various personality people with various character.  As an assistant leader,I managed to  help my team leader  and learn how to divide different task to different people based on their character and style.  Giving the right task to the right person developed the teamwork value among us. From this 30 hours of Social Engagement, I've realised that they are so many people need our kindness and our help. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to us, family and community.

The right matches that can help us to find friends, reach out the community, learn new skills and even advance our career. Volunteering can also help protect our mental and physical health. Time management is another good value that I learned through out the entire semester.  Dealing with studies, collage activity and social engagement preparation taught me how to organize time with all this activity and at the same time spending a good time with studies and family. It has opened my mind and I gained a new perspective in my future life.
Thanks to my teammates who taught me so many things during the Social Engagement. Special thanks to  our group supervisor lecturer Dr. Zalfa Laili Binti Hamzah, who gave a lot of support and advises to help us in carrying out our social engagement. THANK YOU UNIVERSITY MALAYA for  this course!!This was a great experience and I'm sure that I will continue to involve myself in social volunteering in future.

Reflection by Wong Loo Yee

Wong Loo Yee
CEB150168

Phase 1
My name is Wong Loo Yee, a first-year student who study Business Administration and I’m the member of Group 1. Firstly, I would like to thank my group supervisor lecturer Dr. Zalfa Laili Binti Hamzah and also my group mates who have made this social engagement project succeeded. I still remember on the first day we have the briefing about what the Social Engagement about. It was quite unfamiliar for me to join those volunteering project since I’m more to academic person. We have introduced ourselves on the first day of the meeting and position was distributed for the whole project to make sure that every event can carry out efficiently. I was under the Logistic and Welfare Department and my partner is Tan Hui Min. After that, Group 2 has joined our meeting to cooperate with each other in the 2 projects we held that is Dapur Jalanan and Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih.

Phase 2
Dapur Jalanan (20/3/2016)
It was the very first time I join the volunteer project "Dapur Jalanan". It was an eye-opening experience since I never join the volunteering project before. Dapur Jalanan is a soup kitchen project assisted by a group of volunteer teenagers from the various state. Before the event day, we have to do some survey about the place we are going to do our project so three of us went to Bangsar by LRT. The place is just 5 minutes walking distance from the Bangsar LRT station. Honestly, I feel so scared when going up the stairs because it was too dark. Luckily, there is someone who waiting for us and greeting us once we enter the room.

On the event day, we are asked to prepare some sandwiches and fruit salads. It was fun to prepare such foods with all my group mates. Most of the ingredients of foods were prepare using public funds and donors collected. After that, a short sharing session has been carried out to brief us about the history and the objectives of Dapur Jalanan.

On the evening, we have moved to Pasar Seni to distribute foods and drinks for the homeless. You will saw many capable people of all races joining in to help those who are less fortunate. Besides, there is no racism issue when carried out this activity. Foods and drinks were distributed to the homeless without considered the races and religion. Hence, I think it was a good way to help those impoverished.

Fundraising (21/3/2016 – 23/3/2016)
Muffins sellers’ here! For our fundraising part, each of the member has to sell 13 muffins which cost RM2 each. The fund collected from the muffins we sold will be used to buy presents as rewards for the students who participate in the activities in SBJK.

Sekolah Jalinan Bimbingan Kasih
Preschoolers (25/3/2016)
It was a good experience to visit Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih. On the first day, the headmaster has told us the story about the children. Most of them live along the roadside and some of them even live under a bridge. I feel so sad when I look at those kids...some of them are homeless and some of them might be an orphan. Most of the children have no understanding about the alphabet and numbers although they are in the range from 5 to 19 years old.

I was having fun with them when I visit them, they are just innocent and naive. I have learned how to carry a communication with those children in the most appropriate way. Since most of them are under 6 years old, they are really energetic. Most of them prefer dancing and gaming session.  Some of them are good in drawing and some of them are good in guessing. I still remember a Malay girl who felt shy in the beginning, she was so quiet and always sit alone. In the drawing contest, she has show her talent in drawing and we are amazed by her drawing.
Besides, sweet treats and goodies have been distributed to those kids who have won in drawing contest. Although we have about 8 members to look after those kids, we feel exhausted after spending time with them. It was definitely a memorable day for me.

Explo race (15/4/2016)
On the second time, we had contributed an explo race for them. Lots of effort had put while planning the program of the day because we want to make it a memorable day. Before the explo race started, the students have to do aerobics with us in a warm up session. It seems like they really enjoyed it! After that, the students are distributed into 7 to 8 persons per group and the explo race has started! Co-curriculum is important so as academic, this time we have set some quizzes for the students in SBJK to test their academic level. I have set the questions about mathematics and sciences with my partner. No doubt most of them can get the correct answer and this really makes me surprise!

Through my observation, I realized that most of the students prefer gaming rather than questions return on paper although some of them can do it well too. I have saw some of the students can cooperate well with others while some of them can’t. They have reminded me that teamwork is important to make everything go smooth and efficiently. Also, I’m sure I will spend more time with them if I have a chance to do so, it was really great to spend time with all of them. The children will give you a big smile every time we visit the place, some of them can even recognize you.

Closing ceremony (6/5/2016)
This is the last time we visit to SBJK. Everything looks same like the last time we visit to this school, except the feelings... I feel sad because this is the last time I visited the children but I feel happy in the same time since it has come to the end of the project.  Since it has come to the ending of the project, closing ceremony is a must as a perfect ending for this program. Drawing paper has been distributed to let the children draw out their desire occupation. The most exciting part is when all the UM students do the cheer together with those SBJK students and the cafe is full of cheer. They are really awesome!

Other than that, we have prepare cakes and goodies to clelebrate those May birthday baby. I was impressed by the singing performance of the teenagers in SBJK, they are so talented. Well done to them! Lastly, I'm pleased to say that this is the best volunteering project I have ever join!

Conclusion

Through this volunteering project, I've learned how to cooperate with others and commit to . Special thanks to Dr Zalfa and my team members, we have go through up and down while carrying this project. I really appreciate the moment we have spent together although there is some misunderstood in between members appear in time. Luckily we have solved it and this will definitely improve my communication skill. Also, this program really raised up my concern towards my family members. After I have joined Dapur Jalanan and project in SBJK, I have realized that how lucky am I to born in such wonderful family. How blessed I am! I will definitely appreciate every moment I spend with them in the future. Lastly, I would like to end up my reflection with Mother Teresa quotes: "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with love".
